So many of you wanted to see pictures of the interior of our house, so here goes.
Just remember, it’s a very small house! Craig and I have set it up for the two of us – not for guests. There is only one bedroom, as we have turned the others into a media center TV room and a study.

This is why we moved here… There are lots of big trees all along the street and a school sports field across the road. I love watching the little ones practice athletics! But most of the time it’s just green and serene. We’re working on the the lawn at the moment – it’s already greatly improved – and will replace the rickety fence with a palisade type fence (and climbing roses) in the near future. The backyard is bigger, and I’m putting a lot of effort into the garden right now.
There are no bathroom pictures, since the one is so small (even though it’s quite pretty) that it just doesn’t photograph well. The other is so awful, I’d rather treat you to a Before and After post once we’ve renovated it.
This is not your typical South African suburban home… they’re usually larger and newer. This is an older suburb with more old-fashioned homes. Somehow this house is very us. I love it already!

Listen, I live in a 500 sq ft cottage, so your new home is palatial to me.
Three cheers for NO clutter!!
I like older homes. So much character. My cottage is old too and it’s very charming.
I’m diggin’ your floors. What kind of wood? And, I like seeing all that fresh fruit on your kitchen counter!

@Earth Mother – In The Raw: The floors are Rhodesian Teak. Craig did a great job sanding and varnishing them before we moved in.
I’m quite vehemently opposed to clutter… I’m a Virgo, you know!
Oh, it’s lovely, Hanlie! I live in a more established neighborhood, too, and I love it! I also have splashes of red in almost every room in my house!

It looks great.
That’s the sort of style the husband and I are hunting for right now – except we want three bedrooms, if possible.

Beautiful. It looks like you have been there for a while. I love older homes too. Ours was build in 1949 and is the oldest house on our street. Looking forward to seeing the bathroom before and after shots. Are you going to get a bathtub? You know how I feel about baths….Thanks for sharing the photos. It is fun to be able to visualize where you are.

@Michelle @ Find Your Balance: It’s an antique Chinese sideboard. The bucket on top of it is also Chinese and also antique – it was the first gift Craig ever gave me, about a month after we started dating. The two little boxes are also antique – a compass and a money box.
We love Chinese things. The box on the little table in the TV room is an antique Chinese chess set, which we actually use from time to time.
The sculptures are all African – either wood or stone. Craig bought them on his travels through some of the neighboring countries.
Hanlie, your new home is BEAUTIFUL. I love your style and decor. I am so so happy for you!
And I am glad thing are settling down for you!

Hanlie, I absolutely LOVE your house! It looks so homey and cozy and charming! I love the way you’ve decorated, and you have such cool stuff! And the backyard is fantastic! I’ll be looking forward to seeing those rambling roses!
And… in reference to the comment you left me… I’ve been kind of scarce around blogland, too. I’ve been on emotional and dieting roller coaster the past few weeks… and the evidence of that is showing up in the way my pants are fitting, unfortunately. I’m doing my best to get back on track… I really am… (sigh)

Oh my!! It’s so beautiful – & as several have mentioned, so delightfully clutter free!! I swim in stuff I’m working on weeding out – my 5 yr old granddaugher helped me shred some papers this AM, then I took them out to my compost (the worms love them!) I live in a 950 sq. ‘1900 farmhouse’ very nicely re-done ~ 10 years before I moved in, so nice douglas fir floor in the L room, etc,
I also love the asian influence! & envy the sideboard – hmmm, maybe that one I’ve drooled over at the Habitat Re-Store would be nice in my dining nook!! (& get out those metal shelves with games on them, & the set of files . . .

Hanlie,
I love, love, love your house. I lived in Hong Kong from 1994-1999 and most of your furnishings looks like they came from my favorite shopping road. Hollywood Road in the mid-levels. The lines are clean and sleek. Your house looks like a serene place to be…your own personal Shangria-la. I love you approach to life and your eternal peaceful attitude. I wish I had a friend like you here. I am a very lonely human being but feel warmth inside whenever I read your blog.
A long time reader in the Chicago suburbs.
OMG…yet another way we are similar! I love the colors, the way you decorate and that you value an older house!!! Congrats on your new home!
