Cellulite: What can you do?

cellulite_2Years ago a lollipop-skinny friend of mine tried to interest me in a cellulite-cream she was selling.  I burst out laughing!  I was morbidly obese and cellulite was the least of my problems…  But for her it was a huge, unsightly nightmare.

We are forever bombarded by paparazzi images of stick-thin celebs with lumpy “orange peel” on their legs. The medical profession generally dismisses the notion that cellulite is anything other than normal fat, but these women exercise religiously and have very little fat on their bodies.

There is a direct relationship between cellulite formation and body toxicity.  Cellulite-prone women are found to have the following in common:

- incomplete removal of wastes from the colon, i.e. digestive problems like constipation, etc.

- poor lymphatic drainage, which means that wastes which lie in the spaces between the cells are not effectively eliminated.

- poor circulation.

- contraceptive hormones and hormone therapy.

The correct approach to dealing with cellulite would therefore have to involve removing the toxins, healing the underlying conditions that contribute to its formation and preventing recurrence.  You can buy all the amazing creams and preparations on the market, but if your body’s ecosystem is not clean, you’re not going to beat cellulite (although you will be a lot poorer).stockvault_11787_20080615

The first and most important aspect is diet.  Making raw fruit and vegetables the basis of your diet (at least 75%) will not only help sort out any digestive problems over time, but will provide the necessary bio-flavenoids to strengthen the capillaries, which in turn will stimulate lymphatic flow, thereby more effectively removing toxins from the body.  Eating high raw also provides plenty of pure water to the body.  This is exactly what the rich and famous are fed at those posh “rejuvenation” spas and they emerge looking younger, firmer and healthier.

Fresh green vegetable, isolated over whiteOf course, it’s no use eating 75-80% high raw, and 20-25% junk.  It is also important to remove the following from the diet:  heated fats (use only cold-pressed and don’t heat it), caffeine, alcohol, food additives, artificial sweeteners, HFCS, sugar and dairy (if you insist on dairy it should be raw and organic).  If you’re sensitive to gluten, it should be excluded too.  These are poisons and cause far more problems that just cellulite in the body.trampoline-07

The second step is exercise.  Any exercise is better than no exercise, but some are far more beneficial when dealing with cellulite.  Dancing, walking and lunging are good, while running seems to aggravate the condition in some women.  Swimming and water aerobics are very helpful, since the massaging action of the water helps stimulate the lymphatic system.  But the best exercise for getting rid of cellulite is rebounding. (I’m still too heavy for a rebounder, but one day I’ll get one!)

Regular body brushing is another effective weapon in the fight against cellulite.  It stimulates blood circulation in the trouble spots and helps to give the skin a smoother appearance.  The mistake a lot of women make is that they only brush the affected area, instead of the whole body.  In order to remove the toxins you have to start at the extremities and move towards the heart.  Read more about body-brushing here.  Follow up with contrast showers (hot→cold→hot→cold) – it feels amazing!

Body massage is also beneficial and helps stimulate not only blood flow but also lymphatic flow.  If you have the resources, a Swedish body massage or a lymphatic drainage are best.  Otherwise, just rope in your significant other or do it yourself, using firm but gentle pressure.

While exercise, brushing and massage are helpful, they will not make much difference if you do not address your diet.  I know that for most people eating this way is a radical shift, but the health benefits are so astounding that people who have made the changes never look back.  I particularly like Kristen Suzanne’s story, told without any sensationalism or wild claims.

As for me, when I’m eating high raw my cellulite (which sits on top of the other fat on my thighs) diminishes.  Last year during my 80-day Juice Feast I was amazed at the speed at which it “dissolved”.  When I slip and eat badly for a while, it comes back (along with acne, rashes, PMS, etc.)  It’s as simple as that.

This is interesting information. I have not heard of the causes of cellulite before. Fortunately, I don’t have that problem – I don’t know of many, if any, men who do. I wonder why that is. Anyhow, I know some ladies who do have the problem though, and they would no doubt be interested in this though.

Good information, Hanlie, and so true… and I love your disclaimer.

Thanks for the info, Hanlie! That’s super interesting.

PS I’m doing a raw food challenge for January (!!!). Got any tips for me?

Interesting…I just stopped taking birth control pills and wonder if that will have an effect. I don’t eat raw, and am not sure I ever will, but am making big strides in cleaning up my diet (when my emotions don’t get the best of me) ;-)

Great information here Hanlie! I recently bought a new rebounder and I am pretty sure it would work for you. It is the same model I used when I was at my heaviest, which was heavier than you at your heaviest. It cost about $40.00 US. I would be happy to see about shipping one to you if you are interested. My guess is that the shipping would probably cost as much as the rebounder. There is also an exercise in my Kundalini Yoga DVD called body dropping that is supposed to stimulate the thymus gland in a similar manner to the rebounder. You sit cross legged in easy pose and have your hands at your sides on the floor. You either lift your body with your hands in a fist position or open with your fingers touching the floor. You inhale on the lift and exhale when you release your body to the floor. My has us do this for about 2 minutes. I work up a real sweat when I do it.

I have a dry brush and need to use it more often. Last week I did use it and I thought of you…:-) I am still drinking green smoothies, just not everyday right now. When it is cold outside, I sometimes feel the need to have warm food. We have been doing lots of organic veggie and bean soups, heavy on the greens. I am going to have a spinach and pineapple smoothie today – one of my favorites. This is the one that I share with people because it tastes so good…

Amazing Hanlie!

I have never looked into cellulite, but always wondered…. It seems society has accepted that it is just a part of most women’s bodies, like wrinkles.

And than once when volunteering at a veggie fair, one of the ladies there who was a senior member was in her 60′s and she looked 40 was talking about the right nutrition and how important it is. She said cellulite is a sign of nutritional deficiencies. I didn’t know anything about it, so found that interesting. And now you have pointed out some other great possibilities. That makes so much sense!

I admire your resolve and stick-to-it-ivness. But I just can’t go 100% all of the time. Reading the statement about “what’s the point” of mostly good if there is still some junk, I almost panicked. I buy mostly organic, minimal processing, no pop/soda. I’m about 90% “on” but I still have some alcohol, some white bread here and there, and some white sugar. And coffee. What it is about -for me – is progress, not perfection. Trying to be perfect is too much pressure. But I think my 90% is worth a lot. I’m happy for those that can go 100%, but I think it’s the “all or nothing” thinking that kept me in the “nothing” category for years.

So I guess I’m stuck with cellulite. And I think that’s okay. And if it’s ever not okay, I now have a resource to fix it!

Hey, how’d you get that picture of my tushie? *wink*

I had major cottage cheese thighs, as I called them. Big time cellulite! I also suffered from chronic lymphedema, which progressed to the point of making it painful to walk and wear shoes. Ankles? Kneecaps? My legs looked more like tree trunks. I make fun, but let me tell you, it wasn’t. After trying compression stockings, lymphatic drainage massage, medication(s)…and nothing made a lasting difference…the medical profession said “Sorry, you’ll just have to live with it. There is no cure.”

Enter raw living foods.

Within weeks, it was as if someone had wrung me out (like a wet dish rag)! The lymphedema began to disappear.

Despite my less-than-healthy diet, I was not one to suffer from constipation. I always had “normal” daily bowel movements. While making the transition to a raw foods lifestyle, I began to make dry brushing a part of my daily routine. I also had a series of six colon hydrotherapy sessions, and then continued to have a colonic each month.

Today: lymphedema — gone! cottage cheese thighs — gone! No magic pills or creams.

Very interesting. I also notice a big difference when I exercise as opposed to not. I think the muscle underneath firms up (my opinion only) and there for looks less squishy!

Hope you have a very Merry Christmas!!

Great info!

I find the best cure for cellulite is not looking at my naked ass and thighs in the mirror.

But perhaps I should look into some of these other ideas as well!

I want those legs! :-) I’m starting to cut out dairy, gluten and corn (I cannot BELIEVE how many things contain corn syrup!), so it will be lots of fruits, veggies and nuts for me. Got a body brush, too. So we will see how quickly I get those great results! :-D

It’s been ten months without a yeast infection. More than that, for the past couple of months I only had one migraine attack, comparing to six a week as I used to. I also very often suffered from runny nose and acne on my forehead. Since I started this program, it’s been like a miracle. My acne disappeared in less than 2 weeks, I lost 10 pounds, and the flu like symptoms I often use to suffer from are also a thing of the past. I feel so young and empowered and I would have never believed there was a natural solution for my problems, if I was told a year ago. All because of Yeast Infection No More System
