Halloween… Not something we ever paid any attention to in South Africa, but these days we’re definitely part of a the global village and to our great surprise we were invited to a Halloween party on Saturday night.
We rented costumes… and turned out to be one of only three couples who bothered to dress up. There was a separate party for the teens and we thought that it was good that they at least dressed up… until we realized that apparently teen girls these days always dress like prostitutes! Honestly, I was shocked. The dresses were tight and very short, with plunging necklines. And these girls were only 15! I know I sound old-fashioned, but this is just wrong… and I’m quite relieved that I don’t have a daughter. Some of the men were making very inappropriate comments.
One of the moms, an artist type, seemed to be as high as a kite. She made quite a spectacle of herself. At one stage she was talking about her anorexia. Then she turned to me and said, “I don’t know how you live with your fat, because I’m only 8kg overweight now and it’s affecting my quality of life. I don’t know how you do it! Life must be unbearable for you.” I just laughed, because I wouldn’t want to be like her! (She also made a scene about another lady’s enhanced breasts…)
We left when they started playing drinking games… The whole party was just not our scene!
Call me boring, but next Halloween we’ll just rent a movie and stay home…

Blimey! That doesn’t sound like fun. Bet that lady does not have fond memories of the night
Halloween is pretty big here in the UK, but I never celebrated it growing up and I think it’s another big fat commercial exercise and have not much time for it. I know it’s fun for the kids and all that but as I don’t have any, I don’t pay much attention.
Do not like dressing up either.

Hanlie,
I read your blog everyday and think you have a wonderful attitude about life & health. You inspire me with your thoughts & positive outlook. Without getting personal, I am confused. Do you live in South Africa or the USA? No need to know where but all this time I have imagined you pursuing a healthy life in South Africa and comparing that to my same pursuit, all the while realizing woman are the same all over the world…striving to live healthy. Thanks for answering me if you want.
Wow Hanlie. You are so mellow. I would have asked her how she lived with her face every day, because I just couldn’t live with that kind of ugly.
‘K, maybe I wouldn’t have, but I would have thought it.
wow.
if I have to call you old then Ive nary a CLUE what I am
old and ornery?
old and curmudgeonly?
wow.

@Theresa: I felt sorry for her, because she was all over the place and clearly unhappy.
Her comment did make me think though… Most people probably wonder how we (fat people) can let ourselves go to that extent.
What a disgusting woman! Good for you for recognizing her idiocy. Sheesh.
When I was a teenager, our costumes consisted mostly of massive amounts of makeup. Most of us weren’t allowed to wear it (or not much of it anyway), so that was our time to “cut loose.” The clothes still had to me modest, though.

I’m a South African living in Germany and also didnt grow up with celebrating halloween…so like you it’s a new thing for me.
What a cheek that woman had saying what she did to you…you should have replied, * Well at least I can can change my weight, you have to live with that face*!!
That would have put her in her place…

Wow. I mean really, wow. How can some people be so out of touch? And I really don’t like it when adults mix alcohol with children’s Halloween parties, even if they are 15-year-olds. Sadly, Halloween has become an excuse to dress up like a ho, afterall, it’s a costume, not what you’d really wear everyday. Never say never and all, but I’ll never let my daughter dress up like that for Halloween. Sorry your first Halloween party wasn’t the greatest.

What a sad life that lady must lead.
I know what you mean about the costumes. My fifteen year old niece was dressed as a cocktail waitress (I think). Short skirt, tight top, card symbols (diamonds, hearts, clubs, and spades) down her chest. Very inappropriate.

It actually sounds like she might have been having a manic or high anxiety ‘attack’ but you might be right about her being ‘high’ on something. So glad that you didn’t let it sink you and could just accept the fact that she was having ‘troubles’ of one sort or another.

WOW… sounds like the second worst Halloween party EVER! I’m going to be hosting my own next year. But there will be GROUND RULES… especially for the teens.

We generally enjoy Halloween but we noticed that all of the costumes for teens did look like they were for prostitutes. It’s sad really.

Wow, who says that kinda stuff? I agree how lame it is for teenagers to take Halloween as their only chance to dress like that. I mean they never should! Halloween isn’t really my cup of tea either.

I hate what the teenage girls are wearing these days both on halloween and daily. It’s crazy that parents allow it.

I love your response to the inappropriate lady. It is clearly her stuff, not yours. We “skipped” halloween this year and went for a lovely almost full moon walk in the harbor and out to dinner. It was fun. I am not a big halloween party fan… lot’s of craziness. xoxo

Wowser, sounds like a party worth forgetting. I agree with the whole teenage girl thing. My sister and I were just musing on the same ideas yesterday. When did young girls start to think it was good to look like a porn star? And worse still when did parents start to think the same thing??

My kate dressed up like v for vendetta, a crusader for the rights of the individuality of the people against government oppression. My little one was a skeleton with a mask. They will go dressed as hookers and cocktail waitresses over my dead body. I would have looked past that lady and said. “I think you dropped something”…and when she looked and said “What?” I would have said “your manners.’
works every time.
You will always have class hanli…It isn’t something you can buy.

Funny! My husband and I stopped into a similar party on Halloween. We couldn’t wait to get out of there and agreed that a quiet evening at home was better than watching a group of adults self-destruct around us and in front of their kids.

I’m not a big halloween fan either. And I know what you mean about those slutty costumes! I saw some moms shopping with their teen girls and was shocked.

I also went to a Halloween party this year – and could sooo have skipped it.
At least everybody dressed up, and there were no kids. Although some of the “adults” behaved worse than I think kids ever would have.
I was so glad to go home.
