Green Smoothie Do’s and Don’ts

green_smoothieIf there is one thing that has made switching over to a healthier diet easier this time than in the past, it’s my daily consumption of green smoothies.  I cannot extol the virtues of this powerhouse of a drink enough.

If you’re new to this blog and wondering what on earth green smoothies are and why I’m so enthusiastic about them, let me fill you in.

Green smoothies are blended leafy greens and fruit.  Leafy greens and fruit are the two most perfect foods for humans (I’ve written about them here and here).  Our bodies need them every day in order to perform all its millions of functions and maintain health.  For me, drinking green smoothies daily is the first step towards health, even before you start eliminating things from your diet.

Blending the greens and fruit breaks open the cells, but preserves the fiber, making this drink one of the greatest gifts you can give your digestive tract.  Because the food is broken down, it’s easily digested and assimilated, while the fiber helps move waste out of the bowel.  The benefit of eating food that is easily digested is that you free up a lot of energy, which makes you feel…well, more energetic of course.  And unlike stimulants like caffeine, this is not borrowed energy from your adrenal glands. photo_12573_20090802

Green smoothies, because they contain all the different types of fiber, do not cause wild blood sugar fluctuations.

I find that a green smoothies is the perfect pre- and post-workout drink.  It’s refreshing, high in protein, alkalizing, has a high water content and gives me energy.

Green smoothies are also highly effective for weight loss.  Clent Manich lost 135 pounds and reversed diabetes on green smoothies.

Kids tend to love green smoothies, because you don’t actually taste the “green”.  Getting them to try it is the hard part.  Victoria Boutenko, the “mother” of green smoothies, suggests serving it in a covered cup with a straw the first time, so that they don’t see it’s green.  Also, in the beginning, make your kids’ (and newbies’) smoothies sweeter by adding more fruit and less greens.  You can gradually increase the amount of greens.

Here are some tips regarding green smoothies:

wheatgrass-trayDO:

-  rotate  your greens.  In other words, use a variety of greens.  All leafy greens contain unique alkaloids that can build up in the system, so don’t  use spinach day in and day out for weeks on end.  There are so many different kinds of leafy greens – all kinds of lettuce, arugula (rocket), basil, beet greens, bok choy, carrot tops, celery, chard, cilantro, clover, collard greens, dandelion, dill, endive, escarole, fennel, kale, mint, parsley, rosemary, sorrel, spinach, watercress, wheat grass, etc.

-  sip your smoothie slowly.  This allows the enzymes in the saliva to start the digestion process in the mouth.

-  take green smoothies to work or on outings with you.  Just buy a couple of glass screw-top jars and a small cooler bag and you’ve got the healthiest lunch imaginable!

-  drink green smoothies when you’re sick.  That is when your body really needs the nutrients and the fluids, so forget about the Jell-O, ice cream and other nutrient-poor foods you normally have when you’re not well and rather work with your body to feel better.

- keep adding more greens and reducing the amount of fruit as you get used to the taste.

- look here, here and  here for recipes.

- try frozen fruit.  That way you can have berries, figs, grapes or mango in your smoothies even when they’re out of season.

-  Enjoy!stockvault_11787_20080615

DON’T

- add dairy, protein powders, starchy vegetables, commercial juices, etc to your green smoothies.  You want your smoothie to be as digestible and alkaline as possible to get the maximum benefit from them, so keep them simple.  Remember, the aim is to get your fruit and greens in!

-  drink green smoothies as part of a meal.  They are optimally digested and absorbed when consumed on their own (poor fruit-combining is the main reason why some people have digestive issues with fruit).

-  worry if you don’t have a high speed blender.  Of course your smoothie will be smoother if you have a Vitamix or a Blendtech, but I have the absolute bottom of the range blender and I make delicious smoothies.  The trick with a lower speed blender is to first blend the water and greens well and then to add the fruit.  Blend until you have the consistency you like.

- be afraid to experiment on your own.  I’ve only rarely made a smoothie that didn’t taste as good as it should.  For instance, I love grapefruit, but it doesn’t really work in a green smoothie.  Because I like tangy things, I often add half a lemon, including the peel, to my smoothies.  I also like throwing in a thumbnail sized piece of fresh ginger.  One of my favorite additions is a fresh passion fruit, which I literally blend for just a moment.

- delay trying green smoothies. You will be amazed at the results. Quite a few of my readers (including the amazing Kat, Amy H and Vickie)  have mentioned recently that they’ve tried green smoothies and loved it.

Cheers!

I have to admit, I am a bit like a child on this. I am having trouble getting past the green. That being said, I enjoy my greens, but I am struggling with the thought of them in a smoothie. I am going to just have to try it sometime though. Thanks for the informative post.

Excellent post, The big trick on the greens side is to start with less. Ultimately you should blend about 60% fruit to 40 % green. Start at 90/10 and work your way to 60/40.

I’ve had such a hard time sticking to green smoothies since I’ve been pregnant. The messy combobulation reminds me of what I got a lot of the other night. But anyway, I look forward to getting back into them on a regular basis again soon!

I have a question, can you make these ahead of time and not have them get funky looking? How long do they last? I wish I could afford to do these more.

I actually follow the kids’ advice for myself–no see-through cups! :)

I don’t have the “true” green smoothie, I suppose, because I do have whey protein in my post-workout recovery smoothies. I just turned them green. :)

This is a great post Hanlie. People have been asking me about green smoothies and I will definitely sending them this link. I am so grateful to you for sharing your green smoothie info with us all. I personally have benefited from this info. I had heard of green smoothies on many occasions, but it was your enthusiasm that got me to try them. It is rare that I miss a day now and the benefits are simply awesome; I have lost weight-about 15 pounds since July when I started drinking them daily, my energy levels are so much better and my cravings are much more manageable. Most importantly I feel like my no longer morbidly obese body is getting the nutrients it needs. I can not express to you how grateful I am to you for being a green smoothie enthusiast and sharing the wealth of knowledge you have. Thank you so much for sharing info that is changing my life. For those of you on the fence with these ( um Steve…:-) – try them. I bet you will love them.

How serendipitous of you! I was just going to put out a call for some recipe ideas, since this is something I haven’t tried yet.

One question: You say that they should be eaten on their own without other foods. How long should one wait before eating anything else?

Thanks.

I love my green smoothies but mine are indeed adulterated with almond milk and whey.
I am getting lots of veg and fruit though so I feel good.
Anyone who is hesitant about trying these should have no fear! The all veg and fruit ones I’ve made are indeed delish!

Hi hanlie,
I wouldn’t mind trying that, but I dont even have a blender…I do make a killer spinach soup with chicken broth and garlic though. I just read your bruce springsteen post. I loved his music growing up. I still love it. My favorite’s are the river and well….I don’t think I can pick just a few. My dream would be to see him in concert, but I have a feeling that is never going to happen. I understand his parents and his philosophy. It’s all through his music, it resonates with me as well. Bruuuuuuuuce. You deserve every good thing, just remember that.

I love my green smoothies. I need to branch out and try other greens. I have a tendency to stick to spinach because the taste is so mild. I appreciate the link to recipes. I’ll give them a try!

Okay, you have me. All this talk of green smoothies, the raw life, etc have had me thinking over the past month or so. This post pushed me over the edge, so to say, and I’m going to prod the husband to take me to the shops so I can make my first green smoothie tonight. :)

Yay! I’ll have to take a picture.

I’ve been drinking green smoothies for almost 2 years now and can’t imagine life without them. I like this list of dos and dont’s, although I do add vegan rice protein powder to my morning smoothie. I’ve been making green smoothies with cacao lately and it’s fun to experiment.

A couple more greens smoothie dont’s I’ve discovered along the way:

oops…hit the “submit button by accident”.

I found out that broccoli just doesn’t work in a green smoothie. In a normal blender it tastes fine but the florets just don’t blend, and in my Blendtec, broccoli liquefies and just tastes gross. All the pineapple and flavorful berries in the world won’t help it…I guess there’s no surprise there.

Excellent tips Hanlie!

Oh what would life be like without those green smoothies? I dare not imagine!

What I find the best about them and why I am in love head over heels with them… is because they allow me to eat an abundant supply of greens that I would otherwise not eat or have a hard time eating. (I.e. love them blended, not quiet as much as they are)

I love this list of dos & don’ts! When my kids were little (mumbldy mumble years ago) I made them lots of ‘green drinks’ – using a trusty blender . . . & have done a few this summer – like folks say, your enthusiasm & the simplicity (love your comment on your ‘absolute bottom of the range’ blender!
I have a nice blender, I have fruit & greens . . . .
Just got lalitha thomas’s ’10 Essential foods’ (to go with her 10 essential herbs’ which I love!) & she mentions figs as great for sore muscles, kelp for the minerals (my 4 yr old granddaughter had 2 1/2 sheets of sushi nori this AM!) . . .

This is an excellent introductory to green smoothies.

Don’t ever be afraid to experiment. Delicious combinations are endless – keep track of what you like and what you don’t like.

Love the ‘Don’ts’ be sure to read it twice!
