This is one of those posts about a whole lot of things…

First of  all, it’s FoodieMcBody’s 50th birthday today, so do stop by and wish her well.  She’s one hot 50 year old in her boyfriend jeans!

As you may know by now (since I can’t stop talking about it…), I will be turning 40 in September.  We ordered part of my birthday present this week – this whole wish list (I just recreated it on Amazon so that you can see, this is not where we ordered from).  Expect book reviews!  (If you can’t see it like that, you can search for Hanlie Blewett wish list on Amazon).

One of the books is from IronMan Brendan Brazier, who developed the Vega range of natural nutritional sport supplements and wrote a number of good books.  Matt, the No Meat Athlete interviewed Brendan on his blog this week and I was so impressed with the interview that I bookmarked it for my husband, who normally doesn’t read blogs.  Brendan talks about maximizing energy and eliminating stress through nutrition and even gives Matt some running tips!  I can’t wait for my book to arrive.

If you haven’t read my guest post at The Hungry Little Caterpillar about why a predominantly plant-based diet makes physiological sense (based on cited research), please pop in.

Want to know how to cut your risk of developing chronic degenerative disease by 80%?  Here’s a study that identified the four main factors – nutrition (whole foods – mostly plants), exercise, not smoking and maintaining a healthy body weight.  If you’ve slipped up on any, or all, of those factors,  you can still reverse the damage – that is what I’m doing.  And while we have already wrought a lot of damage on our bodies, surely our task now is to make sure that our children are protected from the ravages of indiscriminate living.

I was very touched by this post yesterday over at Eat Healthy, Be Happy.  Elena’s tale of healing (from hypothyroidism) is inspiring and confirms everything I believe to be true.

My friend Evita, from Evolving Wellness, has started a new blog series called Foods That Seem Healthy, But Aren’t.  As usual, the post is well-written and well-researched.

Do you suffer from menstrual cramps? As you know, I don’t take drugs, so I’m always looking for other ways in which to alleviate the discomfort.  I found this useful link on Twitter recently and let me tell you, it works!

Guess what day it is tomorrow?  It’s International Green Smoothie Day!  Have a green smoothie, or two, or three.  If you haven’t tried green smoothies yet, what are you waiting for?  Just this week someone on Twitter, not weight-loss or health related, asked me about green smoothies.  I referred him to this video and this article and the very next day he and his family became green smoothie converts.

Fat Bridesmaid has laid down the gauntlet…  Publish a picture of your naked unmade up self.  Never one to back down from a challenge, here is my make-up-less face.  Years ago I had a lovely boss who was like a mother to me in many ways and she kindly told me one day, when I hadn’t had time to put on make-up before work, that make-up had been invented for people like me.  People like me being mousy and nondescript.  I wasn’t even insulted, as I totally agreed with her!  But I have to confess, I only wear make-up once or twice a week these days…  I feel “brighter” from all this healthy living.

No Make-up

Have a fabulous weekend!  Be good, but most of all, be good to yourselves!

You look grea without makeup! After I stopped working, I decided I wasn’t going to wear makeup anymore. It really bugs me that men don’t have to paint their faces everyday, so I thought, why should I? I’ll have to try a green smoothie – I’ve been hearing so much about them….

Great list of links and (thank you for the inclusion – I always feel so special being featured on your blog :)

My husband bought and read Thrive Fitness by Brendan Brazier and it was really good! We love all the yummy vegan stuff he stands for and it is nice to see a professional athlete being vegan and thriving on it!

And in terms of the menstrual cramps, have you looked into magnesium? I have been doing some serious reading on it lately (and much more to come) and it helps many people. It is a natural muscle relaxant.

  6. One time a pastor said, “Make up isn’t a sin. It’s a sin when some women don’t wear make up!” I was only 10 or so when I heard that and I’ve never forgotten it.

I don’t wear much make-up, unless I am going out. (Much to my husband’s dismay!)

  10. When I turned 40, I invited 10 friends to have dinner with my husband and me at our favorite restaurant (The Cafe, in Rosemont, NJ). I chose the guests with two criteria in mind: they were friends that either made me laugh, or who I could make laugh. We had the BEST time. It sure put the right spin on one of the “Big 0″ birthdays! Enjoy yourself!

    Yay links! Books! :)

You look really beautiful without makeup. I occasionally wear some but I don’t like wearing it regularly… I know too many people who are my age and already need to pile on foundation and cover-up and such because they’ve worn so much makeup when they were younger that their skin is damaged really badly. I prefer saving makeup for special occasions- it perks me up and makes me feel classier on the days when I do!

  18. Chris says:

wow, What a lovely person your boss was. Sounds like she was projecting. Most men prefer women to NOT wear too much makeup. Most men prefer a little lipgloss and maybe some blush. You look pretty without any. You have great skin, a very pretty eye color and bright hair. I have come to the conclusion that beauty comes from within. The happier you are the more attractive. Cleopatra was not a legendary beauty but she had confidence. That’s what we women need. Confidence. I am not classically beautiful and I have never had an issue having a boyfriend. Why? I like myself. I see women who try so hard, who end up alone even though they are very pretty. They have such a hard time because they don’t love themselves, and they come off as clingy and needy. know your own worth, it’s not in a bottle of paint. Your spirit shines. Keep up the good work.
