Snippets
I have no idea what this post will be about. That shouldn’t really cause you (or me) any concern, since most of my posts don’t end up being what they started out as.
Rather like me.
Let’s face it, 21 years ago when I was in my last year of high school with “my whole life ahead of me”, I didn’t quite envision this. This being a childless, unemployed, obese woman who still hangs around in her dressing gown at midday. The only thing that could make this picture worse is if I was sitting in a trailer, a cigarette dangling from my lips, a few curlers in my hair (which would be rather pointless - my hair can not be tamed by mere curlers) and a bottle of gin next to me.
Ok, so maybe it’s not that bad. In fact, I feel so much better now.
I would love to use the phrase “but I digress” at this point, except that I haven’t said anything yet that I could digress from. We can always hope.
I had a haircut on Tuesday. It took all of five minutes, because I am growing my hair. In fact, I think it took longer for me to pay her than it took her to cut my hair. I feel a bit cheated. But it was necessary. We had to have our visa and new driver’s license photos taken on Tuesday and I couldn’t be immortalized looking like a yak (again). I’m actually very pleased with the direction we’re taking with my hair. That’s how they get you to come back… they turn your head into a longterm project. Better her than Frank (pronounced Fronc), who charges three times as much…
While we were waiting for the pictures, I jumped at the opportunity to continue Craig’s Shopping 101 education. It suddenly dawned on me that since we are heading into winter over here, summer clothes would be ON SALE! I found a very nice pair of light brown capris for next to nothing. They’ll see lots of service on my vacation in June! I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for further bargains…
I also found the backpack I was looking for at a street vendor. Cheap! It’s not real leather, but that doesn’t matter. I’m wasn’t looking for something to pass down to the next generation, just something that will keep my hands free so that I can catch a fish at Pike’s Place! My mother, in typical South African paranoid fashion, was quick to point out that someone could steal stuff out of the bag while it’s on my back, but I reminded her that I am no longer traveling through life alone. I now have a wingman! Besides, we’re going somewhere civilized!
You can now follow me on Twitter. I have yet to find out what this if for. It’s a bit like reality TV, isn’t it? And terribly useful for people whose short term memory isn’t what it used to be. “What am I doing here? Oh yes…”
Today is Workers’ Day, which is celebrated by not working. Strange that.
I am following the race for the Democratic nomination with interest. And I’m quite amused when public figures announce their endorsement for one or the other candidate. Shouldn’t having Chuck Norris in his camp have catapulted Mike Huckabee into the White House? I mean, this is Chuck Norris we’re talking about!
Today I’m announcing my endorsement of David Cook as the next American Idol. I just love him to bits! I hope that I can do better than Chuck Norris. It would look great on my resume.
I must admit, I’m sad to see Brooke White go. Although technically I’ll only see it in two weeks’ time, since we are operating on Africa Time here… Tonight we get to see Idol Gives Back.
In case you were wondering, I’m doing great eating wise. When Craig gets home later we will be going for a nice long walk with my trusty pedometer. Watch this space for more information!

I like the new template for you blog. It is very serene. It’s funny because you are warming things up and it feels like fall on your blog but it is spring here. Weird.
I can’t wait to see your hair. I am sure it is lovely.
Twitter is surprisingly good. You can get some good info from it. It depends on who you follow. I was addicted for a while.
Enjoy your walk. I am so proud of you for all of the walking you’ve been doing. I am going to yoga for the first time this week. I have been lax. I’m too busy thinking about what I’m going to eat ;o)

In the US, we celebrate Labor Day by taking the day off, too! LOL Congrats on finding the bag you wanted! I love when bargains and chance collide.

I love the new template!!
And where’s the pic of the hair?
A backpack is the best way to go when travelling, it not only frees your hands up, but it puts less strain on your back. Glad you found one you like

I can’t believe I missed your prune day during my week of ‘falling off the face of the earth’. I feel so bad. Oh well… here it is, belated. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! 80 days is amazing and I’m so proud you had the strenght to do what I couldn’t; admitting that juice feasting just wasn’t fun anymore and ending it on a positive note. That’s amazing. I’m happy to see you’re enjoying the salads and wow… over 45lbs lost? That’s AMAZING! Way to go!
Hugs hugs hugs! Thanks for the thanks (I caught up today on the whole events!)… as much as you feel you benefited from my support; I assure you… it definitely was symbiotic because your support meant a great deal to me (and continues to!)
Lots of love,
- Ben

Ha ha oh my goodness Hanlie you gave me a good chuckle when through your first paragraph - I just imagined how you are saying it in such a matter-of-fact way. You are too cute
Hanlie - just like your blog template (which I love again
- everything changes, I am so glad that you finished of with the fact that you feel better (hopefully really good) because what you see and have now, just like what you had and saw in high school will not (universally impossible) last! So I imagine you in the next 10 years, never mind 20, taking a beautiful walk with your child and as you watch them pick up a leaf, you think back to yourself, wow look at me now!
Cheers!

Well, I voted for David Cook, because I think he should win, but for whatever reason, I just love Jason Castro, and would like to at least see him come in second.

I know exactly what you mean! I could never 100% picture my adult life when I was 18, but I sure didn’t picture where I am. Oh well, it’s the journey not the destination, right?
Reading this post was a lot like sitting down, coffee in hand (or juice and sparkling water) for a good chat. Thanks for that!
