I’m a techno-wimp!

Have I told you lately, dear Readers, how much I appreciate you? With your help I have managed to outfox my deviant spammers and remove their smut from my mind by meditating on the cuteness of kittens and puppies most day.
I found my Akismet in the WP Plugin file and then found out that I needed an API number to activate it. After an hour or two I had located this number and activated Akismet. Take that, Spamming Scum! Although, no matter where I tell them to stuff it, they’d probably enjoy it…
This minor technological victory has got me thinking that maybe I’ve got the necessary skills to upgrade my Wordpress. If you’ve got a Wordpress powered blog, you’ll know that we all have to install the latest version sometime soon. After Felicia did hers, she sent me a link with the instructions. I took one look at it and almost threw up. That’s some scary and very serious stuff!
So this morning, after emerging victorious from the spamming skirmish, I opened the instructions again and started reading. And I’m sorry to report that I JUST CAN’T DO IT! I am absolutely terrified. This is so complicated and potentially fatal that I had to close the document and have a good cry (I may be suffering from PMS, only in my case it’s POST Menstrual Syndrome). What am I going to do?
Let me give you an example. You first have to back up every single aspect of your blog. I don’t even know how to do that. Then you have to double check that your back-up worked, which tells me that this is serious shit. Then you have to delete most of your blog, run the upgrade and re-install your blog. I’m sorry, it’s just not going to happen. I live in a country where we don’t even know where our next volt of electricity is going to come from. I could be in the middle of all that and the power may quit!
Talk me down, please! Someone? What happens if I don’t upgrade?

Glad you found a SPAM plugin. There are several of them out there. I havent used Akismet as I was turned off on all the work to hook it up lol. But hear its good.
Backing up your stuff is easy if you have a FTP program. What browser do you use? Firefox has an awesome FTP program Add-on. Free, easy. If you don’t use Firefox there are several free FTP programs out there that are just as good I can send you some links if you need. Anyways just open your FTP program and drap and drop your WP (/blog/) folder to where ever you want to back it up and poof files saved. Then to save ( as everyone should do once in a while as the net is no guarentee your stuff will not go poof) say your About Me page. Just click on edit, HTML view and copy that information into a notepad(TXT file). Save it what ever name. And you should have all your WP information backed up except the database. To back that up. Log into your servers cpanel and go to Backup Databases and just pick the one you want to back up and follow the directions on it =0). Once you have everything saved then just follow the steps to upgrade your WP and you should be set.
You can do it!!

Hanlie: There is a plugin called instant upgrade. Use that as it is the easiest way to upgrade.
Email me if you need any help as I love this stuff.

I think I’d cling tightly to Andrew, he seems to be the one with the know how. Im a total ludite myself. I recently tried to set up my new wireless modem and do whatever it is Im supposed to do to get my laptop on my home wireless network. Uh Huh… two weeks later I was ready give up. Thank god for a helpful co-worker.
I know, that probably was no help at all, but at least you know you’re not alone in this alien world of techology. Take a deep breath, it will be ok.

Back away from the computer, take a deep breath! OK, another! Now, while I don’t like the new dashboard in
wordpress. The format is not too different from the old one. I guess we have to get used to the look. I always save
after 3-5 min. Less chance of losing a creative blog. I don’t think you have to upgrade unless you need addition
space. Have a fruit juice cocktail, relax and continue losing!

I’ve got a wordpress blog too and my host isn’t uploading the thing to the server until it is completely ok. Whatever! So I have to wait for all the new features. I think if you just get some good step by step you’ll be good to go! Cool header pic by the way!

I have nothing to offer but a heartfelt, “there, there”.
On a lighter note, an ex-boyfriend once observed that the ‘P’ in PMS must mean ‘permanent’ in my case.
Hang in there, hanlie. I’ll bet White Knight Andrew can help!
