Lara Uncovers
Long-time blogging buddy Lara, from Life, The Ongoing Education, interviewed me a while ago. This was on my first blog, which I recently deleted, so I thought I’d share it with you. My first ever interview…
1. What excites you most about being a mom?
That is a very good question. I’ve had this longing for so long, that I haven’t really thought about it in a while. The longing is overwhelming some days, and the more I become attuned to my body and its natural rhythms, the more I realize that it is in fact natural and instinctive to want children. The biological clock really exists and in my case it’s hammering away!
On an intellectual level I would have to say that I’ve always thought, and my friends and family concur, that I would be a naturally good mother. I relish the idea of taking responsibility for a baby, nurturing and molding him/her and 20 odd years later, having to trust that you’ve done enough and letting go. Not that parenthood ends when they (we!) are grown!
Furthermore, I think that when you’re open to it, you can learn a lot from your children. They live so completely in the moment, especially when they’re young, and we could do well to emulate that.
I long to experience pregnancy and birth. I yearn to look at my baby and know that my husband and I created this child together.
I have often heard people express regret about not having had children, but I’ve never heard a mother say that she’d rather not have had her child(ren). No matter what the circumstances were.
Last, but not least, if ever there was a man who was made for fatherhood, it’s my beloved husband. I’d love to be a mommy alongside him!
2. What musical instrument do you most wish you could play (that you can’t now)?
I was told from a very early age that I was not musical. I could not carry a tune. That became my truth. So I confined my singing to the shower and my car - I loved to sing!
Then, about six years ago, I met Erick, who plays guitar brilliantly. Lizana, who is also very musical, entered my life shortly after that. We used to have regular sing-alongs and they told me that I actually sang quite nicely… It took a while for me to believe them, but the moment I did, I believed that I could learn to play guitar.
At the age of 34 I bought a guitar and started teaching myself, with a little help from my friends. I loved it, but when I met C, the guitar got put in a corner and there it still stands… untouched and unloved. I can understand his point - I was only learning and it must have been excruciating for him!
But you know, I’m home alone most of the time now, and I think it’s time to dust off the old guitar and start again… Erick is now in London, Lizana’s in another town, but I’ll get by!
I’d like to play well enough to take part in sing-alongs and entertain my children.
3. Who do you find most amusing in your daily life? Why?
My husband! I really adore him and he makes me laugh all the time. He has such a tough guy façade, but his inner circle (the cats and I) get the quirky, loving, funny side. Our television viewing is always interactive and we feed off each others’ comments and remarks, until we’re often helpless with laughter. And to watch him play and interact with the cats… as I say, he was born to be a father and I’m going to enjoy seeing that!
4. If you could guest star on any TV show of your choice, which would you choose and why?
I would have loved to have been Frasier Crane’s girlfriend! Frasier was one of the funniest, most intelligent comedies on TV. I think they must have had a riot on set.
Alternatively, I would love to do the Amazing Race - when I’m fitter of course! I think you get to experience more in a month than most people experience in a lifetime!
5. If you could have your portrait painted by any artist, dead or alive, who would you choose and why?
First of all, if I ever have my picture painted, it would be in the nude…
I’ve always loved the Impressionists and I’d definitely go with Renoir. He just knew how to use colour and when it comes to painting flesh, that is so important.
Degas and Ingres also did some beautiful nudes.
That was really fun! Thank you so much, Lara, for asking such interesting questions! I loved doing this… and I loved revisiting it. Six months on my answers have barely changed.
If any of my readers would like to be interviewed, leave a comment and I’ll send you your questions.

Hanlie,
I don’t (really) know you, and I’ve only recently discovered your blog, but I think you’d make an excellent mother. Anyone who would go to such strides for her future children can only raise wonderful, thriving children. People like you deserve children more than anyone else. I really admire you, and I sincerely hope that one day I’m reading posts about your crazy little toddler tearing up your house! (And I truly believe that I will!)

Hanlie, it was very interesting to read this interview! I have to laugh, because I did the very same thing with my guitar when I tried to play a “C” chord. I moaned and groaned that I would never be able to do it. But sure enough, my C chord is easy as pie now. But now I have the same angst about bar chords! I just know I’ll NEVER be able to do them. So, I guess we’ll just see about that!
I hope your juice feast is going well and that you are feeling great.

This sounds fun. I’m game.
I loved your answers… and your choice of portrait painters
I love the soft impressionistic tones myself.

You are a very beautiful person Hanlie. I wish you the best in becoming a mother. I have never regretted having my girls.. It is an adventure of a lifetime… and it only gets better!
As for the guitar… I am taking lessons at the local college to play guitar. My dad played Mariachi music in Mexico… he was amazing. When he died I kept his guitar…. I am determined to play as good as he did one day! Maybe I can pass along my books to you when the class is over!
You can send some questions my way… it will be fun!

What a great interview, Hanlie! Thanks for sharing with us. :o)
I’d have to say…if I were going to be on a TV show, it would be the American version of The Office. OMG. I would have such a blast, I think. CSI (Las Vegas) would be a close contender, but I think that would be a bit more challenging.

Great answers, Hanlie!
I think yes….pull out that guitar again. The instrument I want to get and learn is the harmonica.
Oh, and love the idea of nude painting. I have a not-so-hidden-desire to be a photographer of nudes. I’ve done a few but I find that I have some inhibitions to overcome - which is weird because i’m the photographer, not the model. I’ve done my best nude work with pregnant women.
have a great weekend and thanks for all your support.
